Dream Girl's Kind of Place

Online edition of India's National Newspaper
Monday, Feb 04, 2008

World-whirl

It’s like telling me to choose one favourite film from the hundred odd I have done. My journey round the globe began as a Bharatnatyam artiste. I vividly remember the excitement of discovering the history-rich Russia when I performed at the Festival of India. Then films happened and more travelling too. Besides the thrill of facing the camera, the chance to be on the move and explore places is a perk. I have visited the U.S., Europe (especially the gorgeous Switzerland), the Middle East, Malaysia and the U.K. several times.
The English charm

There’s something special about every country. But the English charm works magic on me. I am as chilled out in London as I am at home in Chennai. One reason is because my sister lives there. Theatre is the other attraction. It’s a fabulous experience to watch plays. I love walking down the Oxford Street, picking up knick-knacks, cosmetics and trendy clothes. The parks, lakes, museums, the countryside… there’s a lot to see. You need at least a week to get know to know London.
Next stop

I am eagerly awaiting my first trip to Japan. I am going there for a dance show. Some day I want to visit China.
Salad days

It’s not difficult to be a vegetarian and a globe trotter these days. Indian food is very popular out in the West. Anyway, I don’t like to waste time fussing over food when travelling. Salad, sandwiches and fresh fruits are enough to keep me going.
Travel

Light. I mean mentally too.

Unlucky Kollywood

From my point of View kollywood is the most unlucky field not using up the opportunites of good actress like Sukanya who has beauty and extraordinary acting talent.

She is suitable for playing village girl character as well as the city girl who can change her acting skills and appearance according to the character.

She not only looks good in saree in modern tress too.

I think kollywood doesn't gives values to the tamil nadu girls who is having beauty as well as acting talent.

They doesn't know the meaning the value of Diamond. Here Diamond-->Sukanya(My dream Actress -> Acting,Dancing,Musical-->talents)

Meaning of the Word of Our Dream Girl(Sukanya)

In Hindu mythology, Sukanya (Sanskrit: सुकन्‍या), daughter of Shryayati, was the wife of the great sage Chyavana.

The sage had spent so long in meditation that he was covered by a termite nest. The beautiful girl Sukanya came upon the nest and saw two shining objects inside. Not realizing these were the eyes of the sage, she poked playfully at them, and the sage was blinded.

Chyavana was enraged, and Sukanya's father placated him by offering her in marriage. After their marriage Sukanya served the sage cheerfully, despite his old age, blindness, and ugliness.

One day she was spotted by the Ashwini Kumaras, identical twins who served as physicians of the gods, who decided that her ethereal beauty was worthy of residence in heaven rather than languishing on the Earth serving an old blind sage. They asked her to marry one of them. Being a faithful wife, she vehemently objected to their request. Pleased with her devotion to her husband, the Ashwini Kumaras offered to restore her husband's youth and eyesight. The bargain was conditional on Sukanya's ability to distinguish her husband from the twins themselves. If she failed to do so they would return him to old age and blindness. All parties accepted these terms. The Ashwini Kumaras asked Chyavana to accompany them into the nearby pond. Being demigods, the Ashwini Kumas left no footprints on the bank as they exited the pond. Although the rejuvenated sage looked identical to the twins, he left footprints. The Ashwini Kumaras blessed the couple and left. In return they also requested that the sage give them a share of the sacrificial offerings in the future. This results in a conflict with the king of god, Indra. See Mada for details of the story.

Beauty's Ambition

Online edition of India's National Newspaper
Tuesday, Sep 09, 2003

REMEMBER THE sprightly girl Sukanya who made her debut in Telugu with Peddarikam and co-starred Kamalhasan in Bharatheeyudu. Well, she is reappearing on Telugu screen with Naidu LLB — a bilingual film, in an important role.

However, her ambition is to direct a movie which she plans to do so soon. Armed with the experience of directing some episodes for a television serial on Sun TV, perhaps, this should be a cakewalk for her.

ExtraOrdinary Acting Talent

Indian expats throng cultural show

For the Indian community, especially those from the south Indian States, here all roads led to Doha Cinema on Thursday. The reason was pretty obvious. South Indian film actress Sukanya was performing there. As could be expected, the show was huge success with members of the Indian diaspora here flocking to see the event. The four-hours programme featured classical dances, comedy skits, group dance and mimicry. The show began with a beautiful group song by artists from India.

The Lord of Dances is my favourite deity

Sukanya Ramesh

Mar 21 : Having learnt classical dance for a major part of my life, devotion has been inculcated in me. Also, family values have nurtured bhakti within me right from when I started knowing the world. When I go to temples and see the sculptures and their mudras, the sense of divinity comes from within.

When you are performing a dance on Krishna, Rama, Shiva or Murugan, being expressive is very essential. You cannot perform well if you do not live the character you are portraying. When enacting either deities or devotees, there has to be bhavam.

You learn a lot of things when you go to a temple. For instance, the bhava of cleaning up the temple or making a kolam or rangoli is a small service you do which helps your surroundings to look better and beautiful. It gives a nice feeling. Lord Shiva is my favourite deity. One reason is that He is the "Lord of Dances". And the other is that He is so simple. He is a Thyaga Swaroopam. He does not wear jewels nor is He dressed in costly attires.

He is the very symbol of a typical human being on earth — when we come into this world we do not bring anything and when leave we do not take anything from here. Being materialistic is not worthy.

Dancing to the tune(Excellent Performance)

(From right) Suganya, Gayatri and Keerthana perform at `Paattum Bharathamum'

IT WAS quite an unusual programme - hit film songs, old and new. But what made the difference was that the songs were all dance numbers, and popular film and TV personalities danced to these tunes.
"Paattum Bharathamum" held by Bharathakala Academy in association with DLM Digital studio and Kosmic group featured actresses Suganya, Keerthana, Gayathri and actor Ramji all of whom had the audience spell bound.
The special dance movements were choreographed by Pushkala Ramesh. The proceeds went to V-Excel, an organisation working for physically and mentally-challenged persons.
Kandasamy Bharathan of Kavithalaya gave Rs.60,001 and Tamil Film Producers Council president `Sathya Jothi' Thyagarajan gave Rs. 10,000. Film star `Jayam' Ravi, who was the chief guest, felt that such programmes helped to elevate the taste of audience. Music director Deva wanted to hold the similar programme in other places also.

Classical is the mother of styles - Sukanya and Kala on dance, cinema and reality shows

Online edition of India's National Newspaper
Thursday, Jul 12, 2007

Two decades under the arc lights and Sukanya is still restless. She wants to write more, direct a film, complete her second music album, and do women-centric roles. Right from her debut in the Bharathiraja film “Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu”, she had it coming – the choicest directors, versatile roles and the cream of co-stars. Today as Shanthi in the long-running serial “Anandham” (Sun TV), the classical dancer-turned-actor has wowed the small sc reen audience too.

When Kollywood’s Kala Master shouts 1,2,3 on the sets, stars are up on their feet. Trained or not in dance, this thirty-plus National Award winning choreographer can make everyone jump, jive and gyrate to her tunes. Give her a romanti c duet (the mellifluous “Roja” songs), a classical number (“Ra, ra” from Chandramukhi) or a dappankuthu (“Chocolate”), the petite dance master makes them come alive on the screen, step by step.

Conversation :

When the old-time buddies meet for a Take Two it is pure synchrony. Chitra Swaminathan tunes in…

Sukanya What’s it like to make today’s stars match steps with you?

Kala Not very difficult. They are sharp and quick on the uptake. Even those as stiff as wood manage to shake a leg within a few weeks after attending a dance school.

Sukanya It’s the exposure and awareness I guess that gives them the confidence. I was amazed to see Jyotika do that classical number so beautifully in “Chandramukhi”.

Kala I knew it was a big risk to make a non-classical dancer do the number. Jo too was apprehensive. But she was game for the hard work and mastered the moves. I was so thrilled with her performance that I gifted her a lovely silk sari while she gave me a diamond bracelet.

Sukanya That’s unfair. I have danced perfectly to your tunes several times but you never bought me gifts. (Both laugh). What fun we had doing that song from the Malayalam film “Tooval Kottaram”! I like your approach to film choreography. You do not make it appear frivolous. Rather it’s a happy blend of different dance styles, particularly, Indian folk and classical.

Kala Only yesterday I was listening to that hit number of yours “Chinna Rajave” in which you danced with Prabhu Deva.

Sukanya While doing the song I suggested that he include some comic elements and he thought it was a wonderful idea. The song was such as a rage that wherever I went people would tell me to sing a few lines. Wish I had been able to tak e time off to complete my training in music.

Kala I have heard you sing in many shows. Nothing can match the joy of listening to or performing classical music and dance. I was delighted when I got to do the “Ra ra” number. Such compositions are hard to come by in film s today. So I decided to give my all to this song. And luckily it has proved to be a milestone in my career. Actually there’s no genre as film dance. Like you said, it is an outcome of multiple influences and there are no boundaries. If the choreographer is classically trained, it would give him/her an edge and the sustaining power.

Sukanya After all classical is the mother of all styles. Once you master it, you are sure to put your best foot forward. I studied at Kalakshetra and was also part of the legendary Chandralekha’s troupe. So I had a taste of the t raditional and the contemporary. Chandralekha was a pioneer in many ways. She did then what many are trying to do now – portray themes relevant to the times.

Kala One performance that had a deep impact on me is Padma Subramaniam’s Kuravanji dance drama. Her face is a canvas of expressions. Making you cry one moment and laugh aloud the next. The attention she gives to detail is remarka ble. This is how a classical performance should be – thought-provoking and entertaining at the same time. Being a dancer, acting must have come naturally to you?

Sukanya True. On the stage you can afford to be melodramatic in order to make your facial expressions visible to the person seated in the last row, unlike in cinema, where you have to be a complete natural.

Kala There’s no retake on stage and your individual effort will be appreciated. Stage performers need to know about every department — lighting, sound, set, music and costume. Films are a team effort. No individual is b lamed when a film fails. Thanks to the media, people now recognise the work of those behind the camera.

Sukanya Do you go by each actor’s personality while choreographing?

Kala Absolutely. If the actor is at ease doing the movements, the choreographer’s job is half done.

Sukanya Do you never tire of dressing up songs?

Kala I have always wanted to dance and do nothing else. I learnt classical dance by watching my elder sister, who trained at Padmini’s school. It was only later that I also enrolled myself in a dance class. My sister married Ragh uram master, a popular choreographer. I would miss no opportunity to accompany him to the sets and soon became his assistant. Once I filled in for him as he was busy with another film. I was 14 then. It was my first individual assignment. And Kala soon became Kala master. Over the years, I feel dance has become more about technology than emotion.

Sukanya But technology cannot replace the traditional appeal of an art… It’s heartening to see there is so much talent now. Look at the kids contesting in reality shows. Remember the one we judged in Kerala? It was so diffi cult to choose the winners.

Kala Television’s reach is incredible. It has managed to shrink the world.

Sukanya I was shocked to see people buying DVDs of serials abroad. The small screen success has given me a new high.

The Besant Nagar Sisters

(Sukanya with her sister Geetha)
Thursday, April 14, 2005

Geetha Sridhar is jovial and chatty as she searches through the video cassettes in the corner of the sitting room in her comfortable terraced house in Fulham, south west London. She's trying to find a tape of her sister Sukanya's Doordarshan interview, broadcast earlier this year. Sukanya has been ill, but has recovered enough to face an informal interview. Do I want anything? Tea? Coffee?

The video is found and played, while Geetha pops down to the kitchen and doors creak and click, as female figures glide and murmur peripherally. On the small screen an ordinary looking woman interviews an extremely glamorous one about the latter's film career. The interview is conducted in Tamil but, as with Hindi, there are helpful bursts of English to guide the novice. There are also fascinating film clips, indicating a prolific and varied output.

Something, probably an urgent whisper from her bossy big sis, prompts Sukanya Ramesh to enter the room. Vanakkams and smiles are exchanged and, gentlemen, the camera does not lie. Sukanya is also graceful, elegant and soft-spoken - a credit to Indian womanhood.

Geetha joins us with tea and snacks and sends Sukanya to fetch what turns out to be a very impressive CV.

Sukanya has appeared in 70 films, in the four regional languages of Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada. Four of them have won National awards, including the Kamal Hasan starrer Indian (1996), which was dubbed into Hindi and retitled Hindustani. Sukanya was given Best Actress awards from the Tamil Nadu State Government for the films Chinna Gounder, Sentamizh Paatu, and Solaiamma. The State Government also recognised her service to the arts by conferring upon her the title of Kalaimamani.

It's this remarkable track record that I had just seen documented by Doordarshan. Sukanya explains that the hour-long TV special, with its many costume changes, was filmed on one day 'from eleven until seven.' Such was the DD team's enthusiasm that they returned early next morning to capture a rare dawn sequence, with the sun rising over the Bay of Bengal, on the beach near the artist's family home in Besant Nagar, Chennai. 'We are very lucky to live by the beach,' Sukanya adds, explaining the visuals. 'I often practise my dancing there.'

While Geetha dives back into the video collection, we talk about Sukanya's TV work. She has appeared in many serials, again in all four of the main south Indian languages. It's clear that she relishes negative roles rather than what she calls 'the goody heroine,' these characters having an element of Shakti. But 'My Mom used to get scared,' Sukanya says. 'She would ask "What are you going to do this week?" '

The mythological genre continues to flourish, and Sukanya plays a daughter of Ravana in the Tamil serial Indrajit. A Telegu drama, Bhakta Rama Das, in which she plays Mahalakshmi, is 'yet to come on screen.'

Geetha fishes out the tape of Thakadimitha she has been looking for. This is a new concept - a Bharathanatyam game show. Sukanya presents the programme, broadcast internationally on Jaya TV. 'All the famous dancers of Chennai have come as judges,' she says. 'I have shot for three months in advance, since the reach is very good.'

Watching the video, Sukanya proves to be an excellent presenter, addressing the camera calmly and clearly, with none of the fake enthusiasm typically employed by game show hosts the world over.

Thakadimitha is in four sections. Sukanya herself introduces and demonstrates a specific aspect of Bharatanatyam technique, in a short performance. Then her four young competitors show their mettle in the remaining three sections, performing BN moves to classical, western pop and Tamil film music. The guest judge makes her difficult choice and prizes are awarded. Fast moving and, in the nature of these things, superficial, there's still a refreshing honesty about the programme, and its educational content is laudable.

Noting my interest in Sukanya's film career, Geetha points out that the sisters' grandmother, Jayalakshmi, was a film actress of the 1930s. 'We come from a very artistic family,' she says. 'It has jumped one generation, although one of our uncles is a famous veena player.' Geetha shows me an autographed CD by Dr S Balachander.

'We both started learning Bharathanatyam when we were four years old,' Geetha continues. 'Our dad worked for a fertiliser company and we moved around quite a lot, so we learned from different teachers. When we were eight or nine, we settled in Madras. I went to Kalakshetra and, later on, my sister got a scholarship there. We've always done everything together!'

Sukanya concurs: 'We used to be very active in sports, too. In fact, if there was anything happening in our community, we would be there. People used to call us the Besant Nagar Sisters!' Geetha chimes in, and they both laugh uproariously.
'My parents were very encouraging,' Geetha continues. 'We were lucky, considering we come from a very orthodox, Brahmin family. They only had a slight reservation, when Sukanya went into films. But she has been so successful, and we are all proud of her.

'After four years training at Kalakshetra, we joined Chandralekha's company. She had just started coming back to Bharathanatyam, and was looking for good, trained dancers. She insisted that both of us joined her group. We knew this was an amazing woman. She taught us how to think as dancers and gave us roles that were suitable to us.'

As members of Chandralekha's company, the pair toured the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany. Geetha concludes: 'Madam [Sukanya] slowly branched off into films, then I got married and moved to the UK, where my husband was already working.'

During the summer, Geetha and Sukanya performed together to film music in Chennai, in a programme to celebrate Doordarshan's twenty-ninth anniversary. For Geetha, the India visit was an opportunity to teach her eight year old daughter something about her culture: 'I visited about 30 temples, partly for research and partly to show my daughter "This is what a temple looks like." '

'I also spoke to a lot of my old gurus. It was interesting to hear their point of view. They are very worried about losing the tradition and concerned to keep Bharathanatyam "pure", but I find it very difficult to explain to my students sometimes.' Geetha says that some of the stories or mythology told to students may seem far-fetched or irrelevant to their lives and experience. 'Hence, I feel that there is a need for change.'

Sukanya agrees: 'There's a lot of this Contemporary dance that I hear about, but don't see in Madras. Now I too think it's time for another change. A person grows only if he experiments new things.'

Musical Talent

Bitten by the music bug is Sukanya. The yesteryear heroine of Tamil cinema, Sukanya had recently played a mother's role in P Vasu's Thottal Poo Malarum.

The actress is on a visit to London and once she returns to Chennai she would commence works to come out with a devotional music album.

Sukanya, an acclaimed dancer herself, had released an album last year titled Bhakthi. Plans are on to get prominent singers sing in the album, which would be released before this year-end.

Kalai Selvam Award & Honour by Sowcar Janaki

"Kalai Selvam Award" was presented by Cinema Artists Association to Director Sridhar, Producers S. Thaanu, A.SE. Ibrahim Rauther, Kripa Sankar and actress Sukanya on 19-8-1997. Honourable Minister Arcot Veerasamy distributed the awards.

Sukanya has a peculiar acting style of not moving her eyebrows while acting.Sukanya is definitely a w'ful actress. Sowkar janaki had praised her many occasions particularly for the films like aaha, Indian etc.

Suganya a "jack of several arts"

Suganya is now considered to be a `jack of several arts'. Versatile dancer and actor, she has also written lyrics and composed music. She has even crooned songs. Suganya talks about herself, her films and also her prized possessions.

I am a practical and simple person. I am an ardent fan of any kind of art like music and dance.

So far, I have done 90 films. But still I remember how director Bharathiraaja selected me for "Puthu Nellu Puthu Nathu." The credit for bringing out my acting talent goes to my guru.
I love all the roles I performed. It is difficult to choose the best from the films I did. Besides "Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Nathu", I have some very good films such as "Sagaram Saakshi" (Malayalam) and "Chinna Gounder", "Thaalattu", "Walter Vetrivel" and "Indian". Another best film from Malayalam is "Kana Kinavu", which received the Nargis Dutt award.

My `Azhagu' cassette was a success. I wrote the lyrics and also composed the music for it. People appreciated my work and congratulated me. I was particularly happy with the recognition from poet Vaali, who lauded the lyrics particularly `Kattalai' song. I was really thrilled. On my request he gave me an appreciation letter. It is now among the collection of appreciation letters given by Ilaiyaraaja, S. Janaki, and S.P.Balasubramaniam. For me it is a treasure. In fact Vaali asked me to continue writing.
Another person who congratulated me was Sowcar Janaki, especially for my old woman role in "Indian".
My lyrics for the second album is ready but I am not getting time to sit with musicians to compose the tunes. I need a week's time to make the lyrics into songs. There are love songs and also songs on other themes.

Recently I got an offer for singing in an advertisement jingle. I sang the piece. Then they asked me to sing all the ten verses in the song.
I recently shot two short films in London. One is about dance and the other is a good social subject. They are titled "Check Mate" (directed by Siva) and "Shanthi" (Nithyanandam). Both have come out very well.
I do not think acting in small screen is in anyway inferior to the big screen. In fact, a good actor would prefer performing in the small screen as it allows a person to display versatility.

Sukanya Beauty Secret

Multi-Talenter

I st Profession : Actress
II nd Profession : Bharatnatyam Dancer
IIIrd Profession : Music Composer

Actress and Bhartanatyam exponent Suganya turned music composer and lyric writer recently. Her first album Azhagu was released at a function in Chennai in the presence of the giants of the music world. Veterans S Janaki, Chitra and SP Balasubramaniam have lent their voice to the album along with young singer Harish Raghavendra. Veteran music director MS Vishwanathan and Gangai Amaran, lyricist Valee, comedian Nagesh, actress Lakshmi and actor Nepolean blessed the new enterant and wished her a bright future. The audio is predominantly devotional and the lyrics came to Suganya in flashes. She wrote it down and then with Amaran’s backing approached all the big singers who agreed to sing for the debutant music director. “I am obeying God’s order,” said Suganya.

Entry into Cinema

Having been so involved in the classical arts, what made Sukanya turn to films? With her trademark disarming smile, she says, "Acting just happened. When I was selected as the heroine for the film "Puthu Nellu Puthu Nathu" I wasn't exactly overwhelmed with joy. I always wanted to do something different. So when the opportunity came, I was just happy to do it. It was only after the film's release that I thought I was capable of acting. This was enough to motivate me to do roles that not only satisfied me, but also film-goers. "Walter Vetrivel" and "Indian" are fine examples of how I explored my creative urge. But even when I was doing films, dance continued to be an all-consuming passion."
